Michael Schubert

PD Dr rer nat habil Michael Schubert (*08.10.1964)

  • Michael committed to participate our IGCP project “Assessment and remediation of radon and thoron radiation health hazard in mud-built homes in developing countries”.
  • In case of funding by IGCP, Michael will join us in Vietnam for training of Young Scientists from developing countries. As far as the advising expert mission is concerned, Michael offered his participation with the aim to cover the subjects of scientific discussion of radon (thoron), it’s properties, its ambivalence (health threat vs. tracer use) and state-of-the art ways of detection.
  • Michael could cover all these subjects, including hands-on training on different Rn monitors, in a 3-day workshop. Specifically he offered:
    1. to conduct theoretical seminars covering both (a) the applicability of radionuclides, particularly Rn, as environmental tracers and (b) the health risks related to environmental radioactivity,
    2. to theoretically introduce two different state-of-the-art mobile radon/thoron detection systems (AlphaGuard and RAD7),
    3. to provide reference literature and lecture materials on the application of mobile radon/thoron detection systems,
    4. to provide hands-on training on mobile radon/thoron detection systems (RAD7 and AlphaGuard) in the laboratory and during field campaigns in terrestrial and/or coastal marine environments, and
    5. to visit interested authorities and discuss related issues.

  • Experienced in the investigation and assessment of natural radioactivity in soil, air and natural water including NORM waste;
  • Experienced in low-level measurement of natural and anthropogenic radioactivity in environmental media;
  • Experienced in the application of radioisotopes as aqueous tracers for the evaluation of environmental processes;
  • Experienced in the investigation of subsurface contamination by Non-Aqueous Phase-Liquids (NAPLs);
  • Skilled in geochemical analysis of soil and water samples.
